The English Brooklyn Dodgers Return!

There is a generation of men for whom sport is set in stone. Certain teams are good, some are bad and some are indifferent and will always remain so. In the USA, this would be the Brooklyn Dodgers generation. No matter that they moved more than 4000 miles away, to these guys they will always be in the fifth borough no matter how much time passes. In England, certain teams represent the golden era so no matter how many ill-gotten pots Chelsea and Man City… Read more

Kicking Around The Political Football

Britain is facing a General Election today where every seat in Parliament is voted on and the leader of the largest party generally becomes the new Prime Minister. This tradition may be deviated from today, with good reason if the Conservative’s David Cameron somehow emerges at the front. (Best election joke I’ve heard so far “David Cameron says he wants change. Give him 30p and tell him to f*** off”). Football has always had a stand-offish… Read more

ESPN’s Coverage Borders On Absurd

The inside of betting shops, underneath a teenager’s bed and a changing room – what do these three murky and hallowed places have in common? None of them should ever see the light of day and certainly not be illuminated by the light of a live TV camera but ESPN, with their FA Cup coverage next season, are intent on bringing the inner workings of a football team into the homes and pubs of a nation. I can see why they are interested in doing… Read more

Wanted: Footballing Time Machine

The Luck Of The Drawer

Another big difference between you and your football brethren o’er the pond is our attitudes regarding luck and fortune and our relative ability to influence and harness it – or believe we can.  Ask any English fan if their team is going to win at the weekend and they will come back with a variety of euphemisms for good fortune – “hope so”; “fingers crossed”; “we’re due a win.” Ask a Yank the same thing and you’ll be blown back by the… Read more

A Treatise On MLS Transfers (Part Two)

The answer to these questions lies in a couple of facts.  First, the MLS has a different schedule (and therefore different transfer windows) than European Leagues.  Secondly, the MLS is a single entity with revenue sharing.  What this means with regard to transfers is that 2/3 of the transfer fee goes to the MLS club while 1/3 of the transfer fee goes to the MLS-entity.  This is different than in European leagues where the club gets to keep 100% of a… Read more
